St Nicholas Church, Britwell Salome

The Existing roof of this historic church was suffering from nail fatigue and a number of the tile battens were loose along with sections of tiling. The church rooves were stripped and any sound original tiles were set aside for the client. Due to the fragile nature of the internal ceilings the new battens were screw fixed rather than nailed, and a bitumen underfelt was installed as a bat friendly alternative to more modern roofing "felts".

The roof tiles selected were new handmade tudor peg tiles, and pointing was carried out in traditional lime sand mortar. While the roofing works were underway we also noticed that the bell rope guides that penetrate the roof were badly decayed, and it transpired that the bell had not rung for a number of years. Therefore the opportunity was taken to manufacture new guides in oak and reinstall (these were replicated by local joiner O'Sullivan Joinery at very short notice).

The Church was very pleased that they had an operational bell once again after many years of silence. We also replaced some of the roof oak rafter feet timbers where these had decayed and carried out resin and pinning repairs to the porch cross.
