St Mary's Tower, Burghfield

The Church of England parish church of St Mary in Church Lane, Burghfield village, was originally built in the 12th century, but early in the Victorian era it was demolished and replaced by a Norman revival building designed by J.B. Clacy of Reading and completed in 1843. 4 month Contract Final Contract Value £81,000 (excl. VAT)

The Initial works comprised the repair of items of stonework, that had been identified in a preliminary survey of needing urgent attention. The Cone (Spire) on the church had been leaking for many years. A fully engineered scaffold was designed and erected by PTG Scaffolding of Tadley who have become our scaffolder of choice due to their high professional standards.

Once the scaffold was erected the Client asked for the Cone to be cleaned along with sundry repairs and redecoration works to timber shutters. slate roofs and low-level gutters. The stone cleaning exposed a number of further issues which needed to be addressed (open joints, loose stonework and a badly damaged stone cross on the apex of the cone (caused by rusting and expansion of the original wrought iron bars holding the cross together).

The additional works were promptly costed and agreed, scaffold adapted taking the total height to just under 100ft (30m) and lifting beams installed to allow the old cross to be removed and the new one to be installed.

All the additional works were completed within the agreed time scale, and once the Works were completed we had the pleasure of assisting the Vicar and wardens in a ceremony to bless the new cross
